"unlock future cost savings," Lockheed Martin said — a compact promise wrapped in a much larger design change: a common, modular airframe for the AGM-158 family that the company says can be reconfigured for different sensors, lengths and launch methods while reusing existing JASSM and LRASM production lines.
AGM-158 FLEX: a single airframe, many permutations
Lockheed Martin announced a concept it calls AGM-158 FLEX: a common, modular airframe for the stealthy AGM-158 Joint Air-to-Surface Standoff Missile family. The company says it has invested more than $35 million of its own funds so far, covering airframe design, testing, prototype production, subsystem qualification and supplier work. FLEX is explicitly built around interchangeable components so the same basic architecture can support multiple configurations and sensor packages while using the current JASSM and LRASM manufacturing and mission-planning ecosystems.
Removable noses, removable boat tails: multiple launch methods and sensors
At the heart of the proposal are removable nose sections to accept different sensor suites and a removable boat tail to permit different launch methods. Lockheed Martin says those design choices would let the airframe be configured for air, surface and subsurface launch, opening the JASSM architecture to ground-, ship- and submarine-launched applications — though the company did not provide specific launcher or platform designs. The LRASM precedent exists: LRASM was tested in a vertical-launch configuration from a Mk 41 launcher in 2016 aboard the Navy’s Self Defense Test Ship.

FLEX is being proposed with multiple airframe lengths. Lockheed Martin associates a 206-inch configuration with the stretched JASSM-XR and a 168-inch configuration with JASSM-ER; the company says JASSM-XR will be the first FLEX configuration. The AGM-158 family already spans a wide capability range: the AGM-158A baseline has a publicly reported range of roughly 230–330 miles; the AGM-158B JASSM-ER uses a more efficient engine and extra fuel to extend reach to around 575 miles or more; and JASSM-XR is being developed with a substantially stretched fuselage to carry more fuel and a larger, roughly 1,000-pound-class warhead with a range expected to approach or exceed 1,000 miles. The LRASM variant substitutes a sophisticated imaging infrared anti-ship seeker, electronic support measures and a datalink for operations against heavily defended surface combatants; LRASM-capable B-2s participated in a live-fire sinking exercise during Valiant Shield 2026 on June 27, 2026.
Production footprint, costs and the "affordable mass" tension
Lockheed Martin says FLEX would leverage the existing JASSM/LRASM production line, supply chain, mission-planning infrastructure and software ecosystem rather than creating a new manufacturing architecture. The company points to a 225,000-square-foot production facility opened in 2022 that includes increased automation and a robotic paint line. But Lockheed has not disclosed target unit cost, production rate, schedule or detailed performance beyond airframe dimensions.
That omission is significant in light of the U.S. Air Force’s drive for "affordable mass." The service is buying thousands of lower-cost cruise weapons such as the Extended Range Attack Munition (ERAM), a missile understood to have a range of 150–280 miles and tested with a live warhead on Jan. 22, 2025 at Eglin Air Force Base. ERAM is designed to generate mass against fixed targets and, per reporting, is intended to complement rather than compete with JASSM. Official budget documents place unit prices for the latest JASSM-ER subvariants at roughly $1.2 million and $1.5 million, and Lockheed’s description of FLEX — while promising potential savings through component swaps and upgradability — reads more like a strategy to avoid obsolescence than a blueprint for low-cost high-rate mass production.
How the Air Force, Navy, and export customers may respond
- Air Force: Will compare FLEX’s upgradability and platform compatibility against the ERAM-driven push for affordable mass and decide whether FLEX can deliver volume or primarily delivers capability upgrades for higher-end effects.
- Navy: May value the potential for ship- and submarine-launched variants, given the Mk 41 vertical-launch precedent for LRASM, but will need concrete launcher and integration plans before making procurement decisions.
- Export customers: Countries already cleared for AGM-158 variants — including Australia, Finland and Poland — could see FLEX as a path to additional variants or "sanitized" configurations for less-advanced customers, expanding export possibilities under controlled conditions.
Lockheed Martin’s FLEX makes a simple technical claim with wide strategic ambition: make one adaptable missile architecture that can be reshaped for different sensors, ranges and launchers, and keep using the established JASSM/LRASM industrial base. The big questions remain practical — will modularity produce meaningful cost and production advantages, and will the company and buyers agree on configurations and integration paths for ground, sea and subsurface launchers? For now FLEX is a design proposition backed by company investment and factory capacity; whether it becomes a production workhorse or a niche upgrade path will depend on disclosures Lockheed has not yet made and buyer decisions the services are only beginning to weigh.
