Israel Weapons Industry Targets Southeast Asia with Counter-Drone System Exports

"We are seeing strong demand for our platforms and systems across the region," the company said, summarizing why its ARBEL anti-drone package has moved from demonstration to deployment in Southeast Asia.

Israel Weapons Industry, SK Group and the ARBEL line

Israel Weapons Industry (IWI), part of Israel’s SK Group, told Breaking Defense that four Southeast Asian nations are "currently at different stages of the procurement process" for its ARBEL Anti-Drone System (ADS). The company positioned the ARBEL as a response to a rising operational priority across the region, with SK Group Vice President Doron Korol saying Thailand’s adoption "reflects this growing operational priority."

Thailand’s Ministry of Defense: delivery, integration and operational use

In an Oct. 22 statement, IWI said it delivered ARBEL ADS units to Thailand’s Ministry of Defense. The company reported that, after replacing the lower receiver of existing rifles with the ARBEL ADS, IWI provided on-site training and that the system "has been deployed and is now operational for day and night use." IWI added that there are ongoing discussions with Thailand about additional orders.

How ARBEL is built and fielded

IWI describes ARBEL as available for AR-15-type platforms, for light machine guns and as an anti-drone system. The firm notes the design is "optics-agnostic" and can be installed by replacing a rifle's lower receiver, an approach the company says "enables militaries to upgrade their existing platforms locally without replacing their rifle inventories or procuring entirely new weapons." IWI first unveiled ARBEL in April 2024, calling it the "world’s first-ever revolutionary computerized small arms system" that was "poised to re-defined combat effectiveness."

Regional demand, demonstrations and security drivers

In its responses to Breaking Defense, IWI said it conducted "several ARBEL ADS demonstrations in Southeast Asian countries" during the year and characterized Thailand’s deployment as an "important milestone." The company declined to name the other three nations reported to be at various procurement stages. IWI also pointed to "recent drone-related hostilities along the Cambodia-Thailand border" as underscoring the emerging local threats driving interest in counter-drone capabilities.

What this means for Thailand’s Ministry of Defense, other Southeast Asian militaries, and IWI/SK Group

  • Thailand’s Ministry of Defense: The ministry has adopted ARBEL ADS into existing rifle inventories via lower-receiver replacement and completed on-site training, enabling day-and-night operational use and prompting talks about further purchases.
  • Other Southeast Asian militaries: According to IWI, interest is strong — four nations are "at different stages of the procurement process" — and militaries in the region are placing "greater emphasis on counter-drone capabilities," per SK Group leadership.
  • IWI and SK Group: The company has pursued demonstrations across the region and frames Thailand’s deployment as momentum to expand sales; SK Group executives warned that "small tactical drones have become a direct and growing threat to soldiers on the battlefield."

The deployment in Thailand crystallizes a few clear points the company itself highlights: customers in the region are prioritizing counter-drone tools; modular integration that leverages existing weapons inventories is an attractive procurement pathway; and real-world incidents such as the reported drone-related hostilities on the Cambodia-Thailand border add urgency to those procurement conversations. IWI’s refusal to name the other prospective buyers leaves a specific gap in public detail, even as the firm signals continued marketing and demonstration activity across Southeast Asia.

For now, Thailand stands as the publicly confirmed case of the ARBEL ADS moving from demonstration to operational use in the field. IWI and SK Group characterize that milestone as both validation and a platform for further orders — but which neighboring capitals will follow, and how quickly, remains unstated in the company’s disclosures.
