US Army Advances Mid-Tier Air Defense Missile Competition

“I do want to highlight a couple of things that I think are very critical gaps that we have. I don’t think – I cannot add anything to the emphasis on magazine depth for currently fielded systems, or for the need for cheaper and [a] wide-ranging mix of interceptors,” Lt. Gen. Who advanced in the IFPC Inc 2 Second Interceptor competition

The U.S. Army has moved the Integrated Fires Protection Capability Increment 2 (IFPC Inc 2) Second Interceptor competition into phase 2 with two vendors: a Lockheed Martin entry and a Boeing-and-Anduril team. Boeing and Anduril announced their selection publicly; the Army later confirmed that Lockheed Martin also advanced. Rafael Systems Global Sustainment, a U.S. subsidiary of the Israeli firm Rafael, was in the running but was not down-selected.

Why form factor and magazine depth are central to Enduring Shield

The competition exists because the Army wants a second interceptor for Enduring Shield, the palletized middle-tier air-defense system now entering operational service paired with AIM-9X Sidewinders. The Army has asked for a missile that offers roughly the capabilities of an AIM-120D AMRAAM while fitting into the same physical form factor as the AIM-9X. The key constraint driving that requirement is magazine depth: Enduring Shield’s launch pallets can carry up to 18 Sidewinders in individual canisters, and preserving that depth is central to the system’s purpose.

Enduring Shield is intended to expand the Army’s short-to-medium-range defenses against drones, cruise missiles, and other aerial threats, and to reduce over-reliance on Patriot batteries for non-ballistic threats. The system cannot engage ballistic missiles; the Army envisions Enduring Shield freeing Patriot assets to focus on the higher-tier ballistic-missile mission.

Boeing and Anduril’s offering: a clean-sheet, modular missile with limited public detail

Boeing says its interceptor is a clean-sheet design using a solid-fuel rocket motor supplied by Anduril. A scale model of the missile was shown publicly earlier in 2026 and a different rendering was displayed at the 2026 Space & Missile Defense Symposium in August. Boeing published a new rendering with what appears to be two sets of fins toward the tail, while the earlier model had a single fin set; the company has not clarified whether the rendering depicts a newer configuration or an additional booster for ground-launched use.

Boeing has emphasized lower cost, producibility, modularity, and an open-architecture approach “to enable faster, lower-cost upgrades by allowing seeker, avionics or software blocks to be swapped without redesigning the entire weapon.” Bob Ciesla, vice president of Boeing Precision Engagement Systems, summarized the pitch: “Our scalable production approach is designed to provide a reliable, affordable layer of defense against a range of aerial threats to protect the warfighter with practical, dependable capability when it matters most.” Details about the guidance approach and other performance characteristics remain limited in public disclosures.

Lockheed Martin’s proposal: leveraging existing tech, weighing lethality options

Lockheed Martin’s proposal has been portrayed with somewhat more technical commentary. Company materials and spokespeople have shown a rendering that observers say is broadly reminiscent of the Cuda compact air-to-air concept the company promoted previously. Chris Murphy, senior manager of business development for Integrated Air and Missile Defense Advanced Programs at Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control, told TWZ that “the design is ‘not new’” and that “there are technologies that we already have that we’re leveraging.” He added that “the requirements for the missile are such that they’re going to be new technologies, and there’s going to be some level of development” to integrate them.

On lethality, Lockheed noted it works on both hit-to-kill and blast-fragmentation concepts and will “look at everything” within the Army’s trade space. The company pointed to PAC-3 Missile Segment Enhancement (MSE) as an example of a design family that is generally described as hit-to-kill but actually includes a high-explosive “lethality enhancer” charge to increase kill probability — an example of the trade-offs likely to be considered for the IFPC Inc 2 missile.

What this means for the Army, production planners, and contractors

  • The Army: A second interceptor that fits AIM-9X dimensions but approaches AMRAAM-like capability would expand Enduring Shield’s flexibility and preserve magazine depth, addressing gaps Lt. Gen. Rafferty highlighted. That could help distribute engagement duties across a layered defense and reduce pressure on Patriot batteries.
  • Production planners and the Pentagon: Stockpile concerns are already pressing. The article notes massive expenditures of interceptors in recent Middle East operations and demand from Ukraine have strained Patriot and other inventories. The Pentagon is working with companies to boost munitions production, but officials acknowledge it will take time for contracts to translate into delivered rounds — a material constraint on how soon any new interceptor can meaningfully increase operational capacity.
  • Contractors and integrators: Boeing/Anduril and Lockheed will have to meet tight-size constraints, deliver producible designs, and make trade-offs between guidance, lethality, and cost while ensuring compatibility with Enduring Shield’s palletized launchers and the Army’s open architecture goals.

The Army’s selection to move both Boeing/Anduril and Lockheed Martin into phase 2 formalizes a competition around an interceptor the service already regards as urgent. The next milestones will be development rounds and production planning — and, critically, whether industry can ramp production fast enough to translate new designs into the magazine depth and sustained stocks Lt. Gen. Rafferty emphasized.
