"There's a lot going on at Arcfield. And what we're really focused on is bringing the government a fully-baked solution,” Dan Knight, Arcfield’s vice president for Golden Dome initiatives and strategy, told Defense One.
Arcfield’s immediate push: VLEO launch and sensor tests
Arcfield and its subsidiary Orion Space Solutions are moving from development into near-term flight activity. Orion expects to launch a very low Earth orbit (VLEO) satellite in September, a platform Knight described as being deployed from the International Space Station: an astronaut removes the payload, “puts it in like a little Pez dispenser, and drops it down into very low Earth orbit.” The company plans to test several sensors on that timetable and will fly sensing packages that focus on ionospheric measurements along with “some communications packages and other things.”
Plans for GEO capability and Golden Dome mission engineering
Knight said Arcfield is also drawing up plans for geostationary-orbit work in 2027 while supporting the Golden Dome program with mission engineering. “We have a long history of [low-Earth orbit] satellites. We're building a GEO refueler so that the Space Force can maneuver without regret…and then we do optical and [high frequency] sensors,” he said, framing the company’s work as spanning satellite platforms, on-orbit servicing, and missile warning and tracking sensors.

A central element of Arcfield’s industrial push is a move to scale production of etalons — highly polished pieces of glass the company says are needed for laser communications, precise telescopes, and “very, very sophisticated optical sensors.” Arcfield already makes etalons for its own products, but Knight described a backlog tied to foreign suppliers and said the company “really want[s] to get that investment from the government,” naming the Pentagon’s Manufacturing Technology (ManTech) program as the mechanism for that support. The company has conducted demos and “submitted a white paper to start the process” with hopes of government funding to expand capacity, and Knight specifically noted they “can't [rely] on a company in Canada that produces it.”
Germany’s service rename and space-plane ambitions
At the Space and Missile Defense Symposium, Maj. Gen. Michael Traut — who leads Germany’s Space Command — said the German air force, Luftwaffe, has officially changed its English-language translation to the German Air and Space Force. Traut linked the change to the “increasingly merging” air and space domains and described procurement interest in space surveillance radars and integration with capable missile defense radars. He added that Germany committed €35 billion to space-related defense projects last year and expressed strategic interest in hypersonic vehicles, specifically “space planes” for operations at altitudes different from those traditionally used.
Missile Defense Agency award and other industry moves
The Missile Defense Agency awarded X-Bow Systems an $11 million contract for testing and development of low-cost interceptors, a short but concrete contract notice among several industry personnel and organizational shifts reported at the symposium. Other moves noted include United Launch Alliance naming Mark Peller as CEO; Sam Mehta taking over as L3Harris’ CEO following the ousting of Chris Kubasik; Auriga Space adding former MDA Director Trey Obering as an advisor; REGENT’s seaglider drone performing at the Silent Swarm defense event; CACI opening a manufacturing center in Rochester, N.Y.; and a reported tie-up between Havoc AI and Red Cat.
