General Atomics Unveils Wildfire Drone to Supplant Reaper

“This is exactly the right design for high-demand missions and cost-conscious customers,” GA-ASI President David Alexander said in a company press release unveiling the Wildfire, General Atomics Aeronautical Systems’ clean-sheet design intended to replace the firm’s hunter-killer MQ-9A Reaper.

GA-ASI’s Wildfire: the company’s claims and purpose

General Atomics presented Wildfire as a long-endurance reconnaissance-and-strike unmanned aircraft that the company says was “tailor-designed” to be attrition-tolerant, scalable and flexible. In its press release, GA-ASI says Wildfire “meets or surpasses all requirements” set out in the Pentagon’s solicitation and emphasizes the platform’s ability to carry varied payloads — “munitions, launched effects, sensors or other payloads” — while being “highly autonomous and designed for collaborative operations.” The company also pitched civil roles for the aircraft, suggesting its “relatively greater payload” and “stronger hardpoints” open options such as shuttling commercial cargo outside of conflict.

How Wildfire maps to the Massed Modular Aircraft (MMA) competition

The Wildfire is being pitched specifically for the Massed Modular Aircraft program, a joint effort launched in July by the Air Force and the Defense Innovation Unit to find a successor for the Reaper. The MMA solicitation set explicit operational and programmatic goals — including an ability to self-deploy 8,000 nautical miles and carry at least 2,800 pounds of payload — and a Pentagon aim to field the first MMA aircraft in numbers by fiscal 2031. GA-ASI positions Wildfire as a rapid, production-ready answer to that solicitation.

Range, payload and armament: the headline performance claims

The Pentagon solicitation specified a self-deploy (ferry) range of 8,000 nautical miles (9,206 miles) and a payload of “at least” 2,800 pounds. GA-ASI’s release claims Wildfire “exceeds 8,000 nautical miles ferry range” and is “capable of carrying two Long-Range Anti-Ship Missiles simultaneously for meaningful combat distance.” The company also stresses flexibility in payload mixes, asserting the aircraft can carry combinations of munitions, launched effects and sensors.

Cost, production tempo and the fiscal 2031 target

Air Force officials told reporters that the Reaper can cost up to $50 million apiece depending on configuration, and the drone’s manufacturing ceased last year; an upgraded model, the MQ-9B SkyGuardian, remains in production. According to Lt. Gen. Christopher Niemi, the Pentagon seeks to reduce the unit cost of an MMA air vehicle to roughly $10 million, a figure that excludes mission equipment. GA-ASI said that Wildfire “can be delivered years earlier than the FY2031 timeline” and that the company can produce more than double the number of aircraft the Air Force expects in that same timeframe, framing Wildfire as both lower cost and faster to field than legacy platforms.

What this means for the Air Force, procurement leaders, and civil users

  • The Air Force: The service — and its chief modernization office, which accelerated the MMA after Lt. Gen. Niemi cited “concerning” losses of Reapers in combat operations against Iran — will be evaluating whether Wildfire’s claimed range, payload mix and “attrition-tolerant” design meet the program’s objective to replace the MQ-9A with a cheaper, attritable aircraft.
  • Procurement leaders: The Pentagon’s $10 million air-vehicle target (excluding mission equipment) and the MMA timeline through FY2031 set concrete cost and schedule constraints; GA-ASI’s promise to deliver earlier and in greater numbers frames Wildfire as a candidate for meeting aggressive buy and production goals, but procurement officials will need to reconcile company claims with certification, testing, and integration of mission equipment.

Wildfire is presented as an answer to a set of specifications the Pentagon defined clearly: long ferry range, multi-thousand-pound payloads, low unit cost, and rapid production. The company’s claims — including exceeding an 8,000-nautical-mile ferry range, carrying two Long-Range Anti-Ship Missiles, and offering accelerated delivery well before FY2031 — set a measurable bar for the MMA competition. The next factual milestones will be how Pentagon acquisition officials evaluate those claims against testing, affordability targets and the operational lessons the Air Force says motivated the program’s acceleration.
