Binance Breach Exposes $6.3 Billion in Assets to Theft

"security incident," Binance said on Thursday — a terse phrase that understates the scale of what the company calls the largest cryptocurrency heist on record.

Scale: $6.3 billion impacted; Chainalysis estimates $5.912 billion taken

Binance reported that the platform has been affected by about $6.3 billion worth of assets, and that nearly $3 billion of those assets have been frozen on-chain so far. Blockchain intelligence firm Chainalysis said in an X post that "Our current estimate on the amount stolen is approximately $5.912 billion at time of theft," adding that this is "nearly 4x the amount stolen in the next largest crypto heist." The report places the loss far ahead of the roughly $1.5 billion theft from Bybit in February 2025, which "was subsequently attributed to North Korea," according to the source.

Binance's immediate actions: suspensions, revocations and guarantees

Binance outlined several steps taken after the incident: it temporarily suspended deposits and withdrawals while security checks are completed and revoked the affected address authorization. The company said it has "engaged law enforcement and blockchain intelligence partners to trace and recover funds" and that it is "working closely with our law enforcement partners to confirm the identity of these criminals and bring them to justice." Binance also stated there is no evidence of a wallet private key leak, and that it "will cover all losses from the Secure Asset Fund for Users (SAFU) fund and its own funds."

Frozen on-chain responses: Tether, Circle, Arbitrum Security Council

External actors on multiple chains moved quickly to halt further dispersion of funds. "Tether and Circle said they have frozen more than 1.567 billion USDT and 800 million related to the incident, respectively." Separately, the Arbitrum Security Council is said to have executed a transaction to freeze about $30.5 million from the Binance Exploit. Those freezes account for a substantial portion of the assets that Binance reports as held or frozen on-chain.

Initial forensics: compromised DevOps engineer laptop and service container access

Binance's initial investigation pointed to a human- and environment-focused compromise. "Initial investigation suggests that the security incident may involve a compromised DevOps engineer's laptop, which allowed an attacker to gain access to a service container and submit unauthorized withdrawal transactions," the company said. That description ties the incident to endpoint compromise and post-compromise access to an internal service container, rather than to the theft of private wallet keys, which Binance said there is no evidence of.

How law enforcement, security teams, and users are positioned

  • Law enforcement and blockchain intelligence partners: Binance reported they have been engaged to "trace and recover funds," and the company said it is "working closely with our law enforcement partners to confirm the identity of these criminals and bring them to justice," making tracing and attribution active parts of the response.
  • Security teams and technologists: The company's account connects the breach to a "compromised DevOps engineer's laptop" and subsequent access to a "service container," focal points that security teams will scrutinize as they analyze attack vectors and containment measures.
  • Users and depositors: With Binance temporarily suspending deposits and withdrawals and saying it will cover losses from the SAFU fund and its own funds, users face immediate friction in platform access even as the company promises financial coverage for affected balances.

This incident is being described by multiple parties in stark terms: Binance calls it a "security incident" and Chainalysis labels it the largest recorded crypto heist to date by their estimate. Binance has frozen authorization, paused core account functions, engaged external partners, and pledged to make victims whole from SAFU and company funds. The record-size theft raises urgent questions about how attackers obtained access to an operational engineer's endpoint and what additional forensics, recoveries, and legal actions will follow as tracing continues.
