OpenAI Injects Visual Ads into ChatGPT Image Generation

"ChatGPT now reaches 1.2 billion people every week," OpenAI reports — and it intends to show some of those users visual advertisements while they generate images.

OpenAI's visual ads during image generation

OpenAI is expanding advertising inside ChatGPT and will begin testing a new visual-ad format "later this month" in the United States with an initial group of advertisers. The company says these ads will appear while users are generating images, using pictures to convey product inspiration, demonstrations of how a product is used, or experiences associated with a service.

OpenAI pledged that the ads will be clearly labeled and "remain separate from the image being created." The firm also reiterated that ads do not influence ChatGPT's answers.

Conversion measurement: integration with Hightouch, Tealium, LiveRamp

To let advertisers evaluate whether ChatGPT ads lead to purchases or other conversions, OpenAI is adding measurement tools. It is integrating with Hightouch, Tealium, and LiveRamp to surface conversion data that advertisers can use to track outcomes beyond impressions.

Attribution partners: AppsFlyer, Adjust, Branch, Triple Whale, Kochava

OpenAI is also expanding attribution offerings. The company named AppsFlyer, Adjust, Branch, Triple Whale, Kochava, and "several others" as attribution partners it will work with to help advertisers link ads inside ChatGPT to downstream actions.

Brand suitability and independent verification: DoubleVerify and Integral Ad Science

Because ChatGPT serves conversations rather than traditional web pages, OpenAI says brand suitability requires particular attention. The company is working with DoubleVerify and Integral Ad Science on brand suitability checks intended to prevent ads from appearing around conversations that are emotionally vulnerable, sensitive, or otherwise unsuitable.

OpenAI added that these independent partners will not get access to private user conversations while evaluating whether the advertising safeguards are working as intended.

What this means for advertisers, measurement vendors, and end users

  • Advertisers: Gain a new visual placement inside ChatGPT image-generation flows and access to conversion and attribution integrations. The initial rollout will be limited to the U.S. with an early set of advertisers.
  • Measurement and attribution vendors: Hightouch, Tealium, LiveRamp, AppsFlyer, Adjust, Branch, Triple Whale, and Kochava are explicitly named as partners; those vendors will be relied on to connect in-app exposure to purchases or other conversions.
  • End users: Ads shown during image generation will be clearly labeled and kept separate from the generated image, and OpenAI says its safeguards are intended to block ads from showing in emotionally vulnerable or sensitive conversations. The experiment is U.S.-only for now.

OpenAI frames advertising as a revenue pathway for people who do not pay for subscriptions — part of a larger push to monetize a ChatGPT audience it says reaches 1.2 billion weekly users. The company is testing visual ads during image generation in the U.S. and building measurement and brand-safety partnerships to support the format; independent partners will assess safeguards without receiving access to private conversations. How advertisers and verification partners perform in those tests, and whether the experiment expands beyond the United States, will determine how prominent ads become inside ChatGPT.
