The October 2026 Patch Tuesday updates are mandatory and “contain the October 2026 Patch Tuesday security patches for hundreds of vulnerabilities discovered in previous months,” Microsoft’s release notes say.
Scope, versions, and how to get the updates
Microsoft released cumulative updates for Windows 11 identified in the source as KB5127648 and KB5126653 for multiple servicing channels. The release covers versions 26H2, 25H2, 24H2 and 23H2; the update is “based on 24H2,” meaning 25H2 and 26H2 receive the same fixes with no exclusive or special changes across those versions. This is the tenth Patch Tuesday release in 2026.
End users can install the update by going to Start > Settings > Windows Update and clicking “Check for Updates.” The update may also be downloaded and installed manually from the Microsoft Update Catalog.
File Explorer: previews, Home state, and minor reliability fixes
The update includes multiple File Explorer changes aimed at previews and user workflow:
- Preview pane behavior for files downloaded from the web has been adjusted: for HTML files a new “Preview anyway” button lets users acknowledge a warning and preview the file, while non-HTML files such as PDFs are now previewed automatically.
- File Explorer Home now preserves the state of sections (expanded or collapsed), so users “can pick up where you left off.”
- Thumbnail preview reliability for cloud files in the Details pane has been improved, and the pane has been reorganized so file properties are “easier to find and review at a glance.”
- The update addresses an issue that could clear the address bar contents when entering edit mode by clicking near the right side of the address bar.

Get a security leadEmoji, fonts, personalization, and Widgets
Microsoft added support for Emoji 17.0, including new emoji listed in the release as distorted face, fight cloud, and hairy creature, and refined the design of saluting face, face with peeking eye, goose, lotus, and kissing cat. Users can insert emoji by pressing Windows + . to open the emoji panel.
Font work in this update includes adding support for the Garay and Beria Erfe scripts to the Ebrima font (noted as the first Microsoft font to support both) and refining Adlam glyph designs in Ebrima to align with the current Unicode standard.
Personalization improvements touch the Background page reliability, add support for DIB image files as desktop backgrounds, improve slideshow transitions on newly created accounts, enhance preview resolution when selecting backgrounds, and improve display for portrait mode monitors. The update also adds support for using slideshow wallpapers with multiple desktops (preventing an automatic switch back to Picture).
A new Tips widget is introduced; it provides short, helpful guidance about Windows features and can be added to the Widgets board and to the lock screen via Settings > Personalization > Lock screen.
Bluetooth, audio, touchpad, Copilot key, Camera roll, and accessibility
The release lists a range of Bluetooth and audio fixes and enhancements:
- During voice calls, the Windows shell volume flyout now appears when adjusting the volume of a Bluetooth Classic Audio accessory via the accessory’s volume controls, giving visual feedback of the new level.
- Windows now shows connection state more accurately for accessories that have disconnected from the PC, and stability of the Bluetooth & devices page has been improved.
- An issue where the Bluetooth radio could be turned off but the toggle still displayed as on has been resolved.
- Improvements include microphone compatibility with certain Bluetooth Classic audio accessories, a fix for a crash (error code 0x139) while streaming Bluetooth audio, better LE Audio reliability and performance, and improved reliability of shared audio.
The update also notes that Microsoft “is not aware of any new issues with this month's Patch Tuesday,” but warns that “some PCs might still have audio issues after the update” affecting USB 1.0 audio devices.
Input and accessibility additions include:
- New precision touchpad gestures: single-finger scrolling (scroll vertically with one finger starting from the left or right side of the touchpad) and automatic scrolling (keep scrolling without lifting fingers by moving them near the edge of the touchpad while scrolling).
- A setting to remap the Copilot key to function as the Right Ctrl or Context Menu key to help preserve familiar keyboard shortcuts and accessibility workflows.
- “Open apps maximized,” an accessibility setting that automatically maximizes app windows as they open, available under Settings > Accessibility > Visual effects.
- A modernized visual refresh to the Magnifier taskbar and toolbar icons, with spacing and padding adjustments while preserving earlier behavior for views, zoom controls, shortcuts, and Read Aloud.
- Camera roll backup in Settings to help eligible users protect photos with OneDrive; setup can be completed on a mobile phone using a QR code.
Windows Backup, WinRE, kiosk mode, and deployment impacts
The update removes PC-to-PC Migration, a previously introduced phased-rollout feature that allowed transfer of files and settings directly from a previous PC during setup; users are directed to “use Windows Backup” to back up and restore files, settings, and other supported items when moving to a new PC.
Windows Recovery (WinRE) gains a recovery remote management plug-in to extend remote management capabilities for MDM providers. Kiosk-mode changes disable Windows + Tab in restricted UX kiosks and disable Windows + A and Windows + C in single-app kiosk mode.
What this means for technologists, enterprise IT, and end users
Technologists and security teams should treat this release as a mandatory Patch Tuesday deployment that contains “hundreds of vulnerabilities” and plan testing and rollout accordingly, while monitoring for the reported USB 1.0 audio device issue.
Enterprise IT and procurement teams will need to account for the removal of PC-to-PC Migration when planning new-device provisioning and ensure Windows Backup is available as the recommended migration path; kiosk deployments should verify the newly disabled shortcuts do not disrupt intended kiosk interactions.
End users will see visible changes — new emoji, a Tips widget, and personalization and File Explorer behavior tweaks — and can install the updates via Settings > Windows Update or the Microsoft Update Catalog.
Microsoft’s release ties broad security remediation to an array of user-facing improvements and small reliability fixes; administrators and users alike will be watching whether the promised fixes arrive cleanly and whether the remaining audio edge case requires further follow-up.
