“They’re here, they’re effective, and they are working,” Lockheed Martin’s Stephanie Hill told Breaking Defense at the Farnborough Airshow on July 21, asserting a clear timeline for defensive lasers: operational before the end of the decade.
Lockheed’s stated timeline and recent demonstrations
Hill, president of Lockheed’s rotary and mission systems division, said the company has successfully demonstrated “a number” of laser intercepts and predicted directed-energy weapons would be ready for operations “before the end of the decade,” specifically pointing to a 2030 timeframe for Pentagon fielding. She cited demonstrations employing spectral beam combining technology against small- to mid-size drones and “surrogate” cruise missiles both at sea and on land. Hill pushed back on the long-standing refrain that lasers are always perpetually years away, saying, “Not anymore.”
The company and proponents emphasize cost advantages: Hill noted that with sufficient power “you have basically an infinite magazine,” and described lasers as “highly effective, highly cost-effective” compared with the expensive interceptors the U.S. has used in recent conflicts, a comparison the company uses to frame the technology’s operational value.
Joint Laser Weapon System contract: 150 kW now, scalable to 500 kW
Earlier in July, an arm of Lockheed Martin won a Pentagon contract under the Joint Laser Weapon System program to develop a prototype with 150 kilowatts of power, working in partnership with specialist firm nLIGHT. The award aims to field systems for “urgent operational demands” and includes a stated pathway to scale the technology up to as high as 500 kW for cruise-missile defense. The contract notice did not specify a period of performance, and Hill declined to comment directly on program timing beyond the company’s readiness claims.
That 150 kW-to-500 kW path is central to Lockheed’s pitch: lower-power systems can address drones and smaller threats today, while higher-power scales become necessary for harder targets such as cruise missiles, according to the company’s public framing.
Sanctum, MORFIUS, PAC-3 variants and the Grizzly launcher
Lasers are only one element in Lockheed’s broader suite of lower-cost and layered intercept solutions unveiled or described at Farnborough. Hill said Lockheed is offering Sanctum, an overarching system intended to defend military installations and civilian infrastructure from drone threats; she said Sanctum uses an AI model to select sensors and effects based on the incoming threat.
Lockheed also showed two new systems aimed at lower-cost intercepts: a cheaper version of its sought-after PAC-3 missile and an X-rotor system called MORFIUS, described as flying into drone swarms and neutralizing them with a high-powered microwave. Tim Cahill, chief of Lockheed’s missiles and fire control division, said the company has tied Sanctum to its Grizzly ground-based, containerized launcher to present a range of intercept options.
Cahill described the Grizzly as capable of hosting “everything from the smallest missiles we have all the way up [to] THAAD,” adding that the system “can be outfitted with pretty much anything, of any size.” He reported a demonstration in which Sanctum and a Grizzly launcher armed with an AGM-179 JAGM “knocked down a Shahed surrogate.” On the Grizzly’s operational ease, Cahill said it is “just a really simple little lid pop, raise up, and fire” and that “it just waits and does what it’s told, and goes.”
How the Pentagon, European buyers, and front-line troops are positioned

Lockheed’s claims now rest on a few concrete steps: scaling demonstrated beam-combining hardware, fielding a 150 kW prototype under the Joint Laser Weapon System with nLIGHT, and integrating those effects into software-led frameworks such as Sanctum and containerized launchers like Grizzly. The company’s public timeline puts operational directed-energy air defenses within this decade; the contract’s unspecified period of performance and the technical leap to 500 kW for cruise-missile defense are the immediate, named milestones to watch.
