Air Force Accelerates KC-135 Connectivity Upgrades Amid Iran War

The March KC-135 crash that prompted urgency

Four months after two KC-135 tanker aircraft were involved in a crash during Operation Epic Fury, the service is treating connectivity upgrades as an urgent safety and operational priority. U.S. Central Command said the mishap did not involve “hostile fire or friendly fire,” and six airmen died in the incident. The event prompted current and former mobility leaders to raise alarms about the level of battlespace awareness and secure communications on board the KC-135 fleet.

Real-time information in the cockpit (RTIC) and Link 16 expansion

In March, Air Mobility Command reported that “almost half” of the service’s nearly 400 tankers were connected to Link 16 through an effort known as real-time information in the cockpit, or RTIC. In the months since the crash, the service accelerated that work. An Air Mobility Command spokesperson told Defense One that “the majority of the KC-135 fleet is currently equipped with RTIC,” though exact figures were not provided in the public statements.

A January Congressional Research Service report summarized why the capability matters: “According to the Air Force, the tankers' ability to access tactical data links could increase mission success in contested environments by improving survivability, agility, and situational awareness for command-and-control elements and aircrews.” The report added that the connectivity could provide crews with information such as potential threats, fuel availability, and safer landing sites, and that tanker aircraft could serve as a backup information conduit for other aircraft in a degraded communications environment.

What cobbled communications and collision avoidance look like now

After the crash, former air mobility commanders told Defense One that many KC-135s still rely on standard radios that support some encrypted communications and on a Traffic Alert and Collision Avoidance System (TCAS) transponder intended to prevent mid-air collisions. In chaotic combat zones, crews sometimes opt to go without those systems and instead rely on visual separation. That practice, critics said, highlighted a gap between the information crews need and what was available in the cockpit.

Acquisition response: diverted resources and new priorities

Col. Paul Tinker, the deputy mobility program acquisition executive, said the service diverted personnel and funding resources to make connectivity improvements happen. “It's AMC’s No. 1 priority, and it continues to be their No. 1 priority,” he said. Col. Melvin Baylon, the Legacy Tankers Division’s senior materiel leader, told reporters the acquisitions arm has been working with Air Mobility Command on several upgrades, including increased access to Link 16.

Baylon framed the effort as a marked change in what the KC-135 platform has been expected to carry. “If you would’ve asked me just a few short years ago that we would’ve been integrating as much capability as we are onto the KC-135 platform, I would’ve said there would’ve been no chance,” he said, noting that the newest KC-135 was built more than 60 years ago. He added that the “end state is to make sure that we increase battlespace awareness.”

How Air Mobility Command, acquisition leaders, and aircrews are responding

  • Air Mobility Command: Accelerated rollout of RTIC/Link 16 across the tanker fleet, reporting that a majority of KC-135s now have RTIC and treating connectivity as its top priority.

The service’s response to the March crash has been concrete: a reallocation of resources, an accelerated RTIC/Link 16 rollout, and explicit acquisition attention. Officials characterize the change as rapid and considerable, but public statements stop short of precise, fleet-wide metrics. As Col. Baylon put it, the end state is clear — increase battlespace awareness — even as the KC-135 fleet, whose newest example was built more than six decades ago, absorbs capabilities its designers likely never anticipated.
